Sprouts Farmers Market Background

Starting as a fruit stand in San Diego, Henry Boney started the Sprouts tradition of providing fresh food at an affordable price back in 1943. Soon, this concept expanded into several open-air farmers’ markets scattered throughout the region. Eventually, his sons opened a small indoor store called Boney’s Market in 1969. The stores continued to multiply. In 1997, his sons renamed this chain of small-box grocery stores to Henry’s Farmers Markets after their father.

In 2002, the first Sprouts Farmers Market was opened in Chandler, Arizona. Over time, the innovative stores became popular for their fresh produce and low prices. In 2011, the two fresh market chains merged, keeping the Sprouts Farmers Market name.

Sprouts Farmers Market has grown over the years. Today it is a public company with 340 locations throughout the country. Each store boasts an array of fresh fruits and vegetables, fresh seafood and meat, organic food, and their own Sprouts Brand products. Shoppers can pick up freshly made dishes from their deli or sweet treats at the bakery.

Sprouts Farmers Market Accident Injuries

No one expects to get hurt while shopping. Yet, grocery stores can pose dangers to customers if they aren’t properly maintained. Common accidents in a Sprouts Farmers Market include slips and falls, parking lot accidents, and falling signs or merchandise.

  • Slip and fall accidents: Grocery stores pose some unique dangers to customers. People can slip on spilled liquids or water from leaking refrigerators or freezers if not cleaned up promptly. Entryways can become slick if rainwater splashes in. Customers can slip on floormats that are not adequately secured to the floor. If an employee mops or waxes the floor but forgets to put up a warning sign, people could slip.
  • Parking lot accidents: There is a lot of activity that goes on in a parking lot. Shoppers walking near cars could be hit if the driver backs into them or fails to stop at the crosswalk. In some cases, a driver could hit someone walking in the parking lot if overgrown trees or poor parking lot design obstructs their view. People can fall if the parking lot has broken pavement, potholes, or hidden curbs. Slip and fall accidents because of slick and slippery parking stripes in not uncommon. Poorly maintained parking lots can be even more dangerous at night if not adequately lit.
  • Falling signs or merchandise: Shoppers can be severely hurt if a falling object hits them. Hanging signs or heavy displays that are not properly secured can topple over. Merchandise that is high on shelves can be knocked off, hitting people below.

People hurt in a Sprouts Farmers Market may experience minor injuries such as bruises, cuts, or scrapes. However, accidents may also lead to severe, even life-altering, damage to your brain if you hit your head on the floor, countertop, or shelf while falling. If a falling object hits you, it can cause extensive injury to your head, neck, or back.  You may break bones or suffer from severe sprains.

These injuries may demand extensive medical treatment and physical rehabilitation. You may be facing weeks of bed rest. This may prevent you from making a living. Costly medical treatment and lost wages can cause severe financial strain on a family’s budget.

What to Do If You Have Been Injured in a Sprouts Farmers Market

If you were seriously hurt at a Sprouts Farmers Market, you should also take steps to document an accident that wasn’t your fault. Suggestions include:

  • Report the accident to the store manager. Get a copy of the report that they fill out for your records.
  • Take pictures of the area where the accident occurred. Be sure to get photos of any hazardous conditions that may have contributed to your accident. For example, if you slipped on a freshly mopped floor where no warning signs were posted, be sure to get a shot of that area.
  • Write down the names and contact information of anyone who witnessed the accident or any employees you spoke with.

When you’ve been severely hurt, you should get medical help immediately. But even with minor injuries, you should get checked out by a medical professional. You may feel ok, but not realize you have been hurt for a few days afterward.  You may make your injuries worse if you don’t seek treatment for them early.
